What is Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July is run by the Plastic Free foundation in the hopes of achieving their goal of a world free of plastic waste. Plastic Free July began in 2011 and is now an award winning initiative. Rebecca Prince-Ruiz founded the Plastic Free foundation in Western Australia and its impact is now felt worldwide. Plastic Free July has won a multitude of awards, the most recent one being the 2022 Fremantle Business Awards. Moreover, in 2022 the Plastic Free Foundation received recognition from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Action Awards.

Plastic Free July's Impact

In the  Plastic Free Foundation’s 2022 Impact Report the foundation reported that the 2022 Plastic Free July helped avoid the wastage of 300 million kgs of plastic. They have reached 190 countries and over 100 million people. Businesses and organisations were able to do this by removing single use plastics from operations, changing procurement practices, and changing policies.

For Businesses

Their top suggested actions for businesses are to:

  1. Encourage staff and customers to be a part of Plastic Free July
  2. Avoid plastic in packaging 
  3. Remove single use plastics from serving food
  4. Spread the word through posters and signs

For Individuals

  1. Implement bringing reusable coffee cups with you wherever you go
  2. Avoiding single use plastic cleaning products
  3. Find plastic free alternatives for fruits and vegetables
  4. Use reusable shopping bags
  5. Refuse plastic straws
  6. Refuse plastic water bottles
  7. Avoid pre packed bread, rolls, and baked goods 
  8. Avoid plastic trays used for deli items.
