my time as a marketing intern - reflections from Melissa Alvarez

18 April 2023

We were recently joined by three students from Queen Mary University of London for a micro-internship. Here one of the interns, Melissa Alvarez, a second-year History student, reflects on her time with In Good Company.

Coming into this Marketing and Business Development internship, I did not really know what to expect – although I had gained experience and skills which would be transferrable, I had never fully explored Marketing, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to do so, particularly for a company that was unique to anything I had encountered before.

Co-founder Alex Birtles, who was my main point of contact throughout these 5 weeks, was extremely helpful in getting me acquainted with all brand channels, and the variety of tasks which I completed allowed me to gain a holistic understanding of how the company works, the standards they set for themselves and how to creatively contribute to its success.

Having completed an internship through the same university scheme I applied to this one for, I was surprised at how much face-to-face (or zoom-on-zoom) contact I had with Alex. It was really refreshing to attribute a face to the company, with my previous internship being overwhelmingly self-led and individualistic, and this allowed me to better understand the brand and communicate more effectively to get the most out of this experience.

I’ve really enjoyed the range of tasks I’ve been set – I had mentioned to Alex how I wanted to gain more experience writing in different styles, and she was very enthusiastic with the idea of me writing and publishing a Q&A style blog that I oversaw from start to finish.

Other tasks allowed me to work on this further, including succinctly populating business descriptions to encapsulate their core values, and my research into marketing strategies helped me tap into my creative side to find solutions and ideas.

I’ve also realised that shopping ethically does not have to be as difficult as it had previously seemed to me – researching into many of these businesses, I was surprised that there were so many near me at price points competitive to the coffee shops, clothes stores, and general goods that I used to go to or buy.

With the good that so many of these companies do, it has definitely inspired me to shop more sustainably in the future and develop a greater awareness around what I’m consuming.

I have been interested in Communications and Marketing for a while now, and I really do believe that this internship has helped spark a further interest – I am only grateful for the opportunity to have gained experience with a supportive and impactful company and look forward to pursuing these career paths in the future.
