bond street - the new sustainability shopping hot-spot

If you’re a Londoner who’s asked about the shopping experience at Bond Street, high end luxury right next to high-street fast fashion is probably what comes to mind, maybe followed by busy and tourists! I would put money on sustainability not being anywhere near your top 10 reactions.

And yet, wIth the opening of the good store, self-billed as the UK’s first sustainable department store, there are now not one, not two, but THREE actual good companies just a two minute walk from the tube station on South Molton Street.

So if you’re like me, and you love a good shopping spree but are also conscientious about the environment, then Bond Street is your new go-to destination.

Opened by environmental charity groundworkthe good store brings together a whole range of different sustainable products to the high street so you can see products in real life (whilst e-commerce is great, I do prefer getting to see things IRL!). They focus on items that have been given a new lease of life and new items which are made with significantly less impact on the environment than their usual counterparts. There’s also a range of secondhand clothing upstairs, thanks to a partnership with charity Triad, and a big selection of secondhand books too.

As well as The Good Store, sustainable lifestyle brand so just shop stocks a curation of ethically-sourced accessories and homeware, handcrafted by female artisans from some of the most vulnerable communities around the world, using traditional skills that have been passed down through generations. You’ll find beautiful blankets, jewellery, plates and more.

Then for a rest and rehydrate, there’s coffee shop fair shot, which was set up to provide employment and training for young adults with learning disabilities - 93% of adults in the UK with learning disabilities are unemployed. This is an Instagram dream (absolutely mean that as a compliment!) and the staff are quite possibly the friendliest I’ve come across in London.

Finally, we’d also recommend taking a little stroll down to the Piccadilly end of Regent Street to visit bottletop’s flagship store. BOTTLETOP makes bags and other accessories from up-cycled ring pulls which are sourced and cleaned in Brazil. Their products are a stunning example of circularity, and how seemingly waste material can be transformed into something new, desirable and luxurious. Their store was created from 3D printed up-cyled ocean plastic and its bottletop ceiling is a work of art in its own right.

It’s worth noting that when we say good companies, we don’t mean mainstream brands who happen to be showcasing their so-called ‘conscious collection. At In Good Company, we are all about showcasing and promoting companies who are completely committed to doing business better, and have this purpose embedded right at the heart of everything they do.

As shoppers, we have the power to make a huge difference when it comes to sustainability. The planet is under immense strain due to the fashion industry and we’re all waking up to that. Clearly we can’t solve everything through our actions alone - and companies have a big responsibility too - but one thing we can do is buy less and when we do buy, buy better.

So, you heard it here first - there’s a new sustainable high street in town, and it’s called Bond Street. This trendy spot is packing a serious sustainability punch, with ethical fashion brands, recycled materials, and solar-powered stores. If you’re looking for a sustainable shopping experience in London that doesn’t sacrifice style, right now Bond Street is the place to be.
