Meet the team: Faith Moraa

Meet the team: Faith Moraa

20 December 2023

We were over the moon when Faith joined In Good Company as a junior front-end developer, back in August. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Faith was placed with us via Intern Match, a leading internship programme, as part of the Global Employment Challenge which aims to find full-time employment for 10 million of Africa’s best and brightest.

As Faith celebrates her 5 month anniversary with us, we thought it was high time that we gave her a proper welcome and introduction! Read on to find out more about Faith's background, motivations and passions.

Can you tell us a little about your background?

Hi, I'm Faith Moraa, a junior software developer based in Nairobi, Kenya. My background is in Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics, and I recently completed a software engineering bootcamp.

My tech journey began with a childhood love for building and fixing things, steering me into spaces often dominated by men. I explored robotics for a while after uni, which eventually led me to the captivating world of software development.

What inspired you to join In Good Company?

What inspired me to join In Good Company was a longing for connection, a desire to be part of something that transcends the ordinary. In a world crowded with impersonal brands, I found solace in the company's commitment to joyful small businesses.

The advocacy for positive change resonated deeply with me – being a voice for those small business owners who champion not just profit, but people, the planet, and meaningful transformation. And then there's this infectious belief that good businesses are not just about commerce; they can be agents of profound change.

What are you most excited about in your role?

My current role at In Good Company is as a frontend developer and I also get to do a bit of design work on the side. I’ve had the fantastic opportunity to explore a new framework,  which has been a bit like stepping into an exciting adventure. Learning and experimenting with this framework feels like unlocking a new dimension of creative possibilities.

Moreover, being involved in In Good Company's design work and prototyping on Figma helps me be in my element where I get to blend creativity with code to craft websites that tell a compelling story.

To me it's not just a job; it's a journey of turning ideas into a visual reality and I'm thrilled I get to be the storyteller in this digital landscape.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work, my time is a delightful mix of chill vibes and lively pursuits. When I'm not immersed in a K-drama, soaking in those feel-good vibes, you might catch me sneaking in a quick nap for that extra boost. But the real magic happens on weekends,  I'm either strumming my guitar or singing, a proud member of a wonderful singing group and a band. It adds a dash of fun and rhythm to my weekends, making them not just entertaining but downright fascinating.

And then there's my culinary escapades—I'm all about exploring new foods, especially these days, with a particular love for the goodness of Asian cuisine.I pretty much named my new cat after trying out Japanese Miso soup :)

What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know?

I'm basically a dance legend (in my mind). My two left feet might not agree, but in my vivid imagination, I'm a dance prodigy. It's like my own little dance revolution, and reality just hasn't caught up yet. Who needs coordination when you have confidence, right?

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

Right now, I'm really into improving my design skills. I want the projects I work on—whether it's websites or mobile apps—to feel like a smooth and enjoyable experience for users. I love everything about design, and I'm working hard to make sure what I design matches perfectly with what I code. It's like painting a picture, and I want every detail to be just right for the people using it.

Is there a particular aspect of our company culture you find appealing?

What makes In Good Company truly special to me is the profound sense of being heard and seen within the team. Unlike many workplaces where your voice might get lost in the crowd, here, every team member is valued, and opinions are not just welcomed but actively sought after.

Alex and Sarah genuinely appreciate the power of each individual's voice, and this to me has been a game-changer. There's a culture of openness and inclusivity that allows me to express myself freely, share my thoughts, and contribute to the decision-making process. The 'unicorn of the week' recognition is just one example of how our achievements, big or small, are acknowledged, creating an environment where everyone feels seen for their unique contributions.

One delightful aspect that adds a touch of uniqueness to our workplace is the shared love for naps. Alex and Sarah are pro-napping, understanding that sometimes, a brief rest can recharge creativity and productivity. This embrace of a healthy work-life balance not only makes the work more enjoyable but also fosters a strong sense of togetherness.

For me the sense of recognition, respect for diverse perspectives, and the delightful pro-napping culture make In Good Company more than just a workplace; it's a space where I’m empowered to bring my authentic self to the table, making every day a rewarding and enriching experience.

What good cause are you particularly passionate about?

One good cause im passionate about and have a deep love for is a female-founded Kenyan based organization called Food for Education(F4E) which tackles childhood hunger, one school meal at a time. Their mission resonates deeply with me – the belief that no child should face the challenges of learning on an empty stomach. I'm drawn to the simplicity and power of their approach, where every meal becomes a catalyst for change.

Imagine a world where parents pay for school lunches through a simple tap on a wristband, making sure their children receive the nourishment they need. Tap2Eat, a digital platform under F4E, seamlessly integrates technology into the fight against hunger, making nutritious meals accessible to every child. The vision of eradicating childhood hunger through innovative solutions like Tap2Eat ignites a passion in me, inspiring me to dream of a day when no child goes to bed hungry.
