At In Good Company we’re not just committed to platforming good companies but also to being one ourselves. So we’re really pleased to say that we’ve officially joined the Disability Confident employers scheme to demonstrate that we are committed to being a diverse and inclusive company. Its also an issue close to our hearts as one of our founders, Sarah, is a disabled entrepreneur.
Read on to find out more about the scheme, why it matters and how you can get involved too.
What is the Disability Confident employer scheme?
The Disability Confident employer scheme was developed by representatives of disabled people alongside employers through the Department for Work and Pensions as a way employers can welcome disabled people into the workplace.
The scheme provides advice and support on how to think differently about disability and ensure that eEmployers can appreciate the talents that disabled people can bring to their workforce. It also helps them to attract, recruit and retain disabled workers, all whilst helping to change the narrative around disability.
Why is this so it important?
Even today the stats about employment rates among disabled people are sobering.
According to Scope, the employment rate for disabled people in the UK is just 53% compared to 82% of non-disabled people. which is lower than non-disabled disabled., and disabled people They are twice as likely to be unemployed and 3 times as likely to be economically inactive.
It's really important to remove negative stigmas surrounding disabled people because it can make their employment search even harder.
Why this matters to us at In Good Company
Becoming Disability Confident is simple and the right thing to do. At In Good Company, we’ve worked hard to ensure we’re building an inclusive and diverse company where everyone is welcomed and supported. We have two female founders and two of our three company Directors are neurodiverse.
Sarah Kingston, In Good Company’s co-founder, has dealt with a long-term health condition that has brought up many challenges not only in her personal life but also in the workplace. Recently, in an interview with d:Entrepreneur, Sarah opened up about the challenges this can cause and how much a supportive work environment matters:

"Some days are just bad days where I’m only able to do the minimum. Having a Co-Founder and team that understands that is key for me in being able to be an entrepreneur. Not all disabilities are immediately visible. You never know what someone is dealing with and so you shouldn’t make assumptions."

That’s just one of the many reasons why we believe it's important to have an inclusive culture in the workplace to collaborate and ensure everyone has the chance to succeed.
